working methods

changing working methods is painful but essential. i typically work with field recordings or vst instruments in a strictly cubase environment. this has been fun and challenging, but i'm interested in trying out some new methods. first, i've been trying to get my head around max/msp. it is great fun but intimidating as hell. almost too many possibilities. the second is ableton live. i've toyed with it in the past but nothing serious. what i'm currently working on is a remix of earlier work, and this seemed to be a perfect experiment to cut my teeth in an ableton live environment. it's a lot more powerful than i remember, and quite intuitive. this change in workflow has opened up all kinds of new doors to strange ideas. although i'd rather be playing with live samples fed through analogue gear there are still so many ways to be having fun with the boring old laptop.

new audio available: playtime it was recorded primarily using children's toys (piano, banjo, firetruck, flowers, helicopter, loader, horse, giraffe, alligator & cardboard box and a few others i forgot), as well as with a small classical guitar. lots of fun to make, and a bit of a change of pace from the usual output. hopefully the next work is even more divergent.

here's a new set of work, set the world at six and seven. in some ways a departure from previous stuff, in other ways a throwback to early work. the next work is already in progress and will be mostly based around live instrumentation (done the dirty spoons way).

one of my neighbours insists on washing the street. i'm not entirely sure why, he seems relatively alright in the head. he starts with the sidewalk and works his way across, pushing the rocks out of the way. it's a mammoth waste of water. a broom would be far more effective.

ok, this one kind of happened by accident. i wasn't intending to sit down and spit out a follow up to ashes of long-dead stars and happened to be in the right mood. i blame it on vancouver weather. here it is anyway, called horae. it's a series of 12 cataclysms, a continuation of the previous ones. next project? so far it looks to divert from the previous work.

i was sitting on a couple of the tracks for a while, but i found time to finish them off. the result is everything that is possible happens. and although it looks absurd or photoshopped, the cover photo is real.

captains of industry

captains of industry is complete and available for free. the main piece is based around a tour of a concrete plant - see the short videos below to get some idea of how strange the place was. the day we went there was literally no one working in the plant except inside in the control room. haunting, deafening and standing next to those giant rotating kilns is quite possibly the hottest place i've ever been in my life. the second piece is derived from the sound of cutting concrete with a slab saw, a job i had for a while. it's a deafening cacophony unless you're wearing ear muffs. even with them, the violence of the process is physically and aurally overwhelming (in a good way). concrete plant tour videos:

for a year or so i worked in coal harbour, at the mouth of vancouver's stanley park. this track is based on a heavily processed sample i took while walking to work one morning along the seawall. seawall [5.02min, 4.62mb, 128kbps, mp3]
